"I don't want to find them."

"Then I can tell you what you're up against."

"I think Eliza already has a good idea of what she's up against. Seeing as how this isn't the first time you boys have made a run at us, I'm getting a good idea as well."

"Then what do you want from me?" the intruder asked.

"What's your name?"

The question obviously caught the man off his guard. He blinked a few times, but couldn't take his eyes away from the gun filling Slocum's hand. "Andy."

"Tell you what, Andy. I want you to let Theil know that me and Eliza don't like it when killers like yourself sneak up to stick a knife in our backs."

Andy nodded vigorously.

Slocum nodded also. Backing up a few steps, he lowered his gun and then finally eased it back into its holster. He relaxed his posture, allowed his shoulders to come down a little, and then began making his way back to camp.

The sound of rustling once more drifted through the air. Unlike the last time he'd heard it, Slocum knew exactly what was causing that sound. He turned to find Andy scrambling for his knife. To the younger man's credit, Andy was fast enough to get to the weapon and cock his arm back to throw it into a spot between Slocum's ribs.

Slocum, on the other hand, was just a bit faster.

The Colt Navy cleared leather with a sound that could barely be heard. Slocum's eyes were already locked onto Andy's face, which was exactly where he intended on putting his next bullet. The pistol bucked once against Slocum's palm and delivered its smoky cargo all the way through Andy's head.

The younger man's brains looked like a dark, greasy mist as they exploded from the back of his skull. Andy's head snapped back as if he'd been kicked, and his back hit the ground with a solid thump. His arms twitched until the last bit of life bled out of him.
